How to Survive an Affair

Details has a very typical Detailsesque article on adultery. Having been an accomplice and victim of affairs, my thoughts are that that they are never as glamorous as one imagines, and obviously imply deep seated structural issues in your respective relationship.

All in all, affairs are typically more trouble than they are worth however they do serve one purpose- they are a wake up call. Sometimes the ties that bind are like quicksand; its difficult to extricate one's self from a relationship. By 'indulging', thats your unconscious telling you to wake up and smell the coffee. Interestingly, what are the boundaries of indulgence? The key question is:

Does the indulgence have to be physical?

Quite simply, no. I believe if you spend time thinking of someone else that should be an early warning signal. Relationships, after all, are the ultimate of hearts and minds. If the mind is the first to go, can the heart be far behind? Probably not. Be honest with yourself, in your heart you know the truth, despite your conflicted feelings.

I imagine it's different for men vs. women. Men are motivated by carnal instincts. Women, on the other hand, are far more sophisticated in their instruments of destruction.
