Chestnut vs. Kobayashi Recap
We have just witnessed the greatest feat of competitive eating, well, ever. Joey Chestnut, the up and coming challenger, was ready to take away the crown from the reigning champion, and Kal El's personal favorite, Takeru Kobayashi. And he did it.
Full credit to Chestnut for coming in and de-throning the champ. What makes it even more amazing is that we're not talking about just any incumbent, we're talking about an all-time great, a sure shot first ballot Hall-of-Famer, Kobayashi.
In this landmark contest, previous world records were shattered by both competitors, and the final score was 66-63 in favor of Chestnut. What made the event even more remarkable was that they were tied at 60 heading into the final minute, and even at the end...till Kobayashi suffered from, what's known in the trade as, a 'reversal of fortune'. You can witness it at approximately the 5:05 minute marker. In the end we, the fans of competitive eating, were the real winners to see these gladiators at the peak of their game. For Chestnut it's a legendary win, one that he'll always remember, where he brought home the belt on Fourth of July. Congrats.
