How to Survive an Affair

Details has a very typical Detailsesque article on adultery. Having been an accomplice and victim of affairs, my thoughts are that that they are never as glamorous as one imagines, and obviously imply deep seated structural issues in your respective relationship.

All in all, affairs are typically more trouble than they are worth however they do serve one purpose- they are a wake up call. Sometimes the ties that bind are like quicksand; its difficult to extricate one's self from a relationship. By 'indulging', thats your unconscious telling you to wake up and smell the coffee. Interestingly, what are the boundaries of indulgence? The key question is:

Does the indulgence have to be physical?

Quite simply, no. I believe if you spend time thinking of someone else that should be an early warning signal. Relationships, after all, are the ultimate of hearts and minds. If the mind is the first to go, can the heart be far behind? Probably not. Be honest with yourself, in your heart you know the truth, despite your conflicted feelings.

I imagine it's different for men vs. women. Men are motivated by carnal instincts. Women, on the other hand, are far more sophisticated in their instruments of destruction.

Winnie? From Wonder Years?

Wonder Years was, and remains, one of my favorite television shows. Let's admit it, Winnie was a nerd. A nerd I thought was incredibly cute. Yes she had/has a big head (literally), but there just was something about her. And, I have to admit, Winnie has grown up to become a bona fide hotty. Goddamn, she is hot.

Oh true to nerd form, Winnie has written a book called, 'Math Doesn't Suck'. And, yes, I too was disappointed that Kevin and Winnie didn't end up together.

Blue Stripes

I Sit and Think

I sit beside the fire and think
of all that I have seen,
of meadow-flowers and butterflies
in summers that have been;

Of yellow leaves and gossamer
in autumns that there were,
with morning mist and silver sun
and wind upon my hair.

I sit beside the fire and think
of how the world will be
when winter comes without a spring
that I shall never see.

For still there are so many things
that I have never seen:
in every wood in every spring
there is a different green.

I sit beside the fire and think
of people long ago,
and people who will see a world
that I shall never know.

But all the while I sit and think
of times there were before,
I listen for returning feet
and voices at the door.

The Man With No Name Trilogy

Leone's five westerns are famous for their post-production dubbing. One movie critic has said of them: "The guns sound like cannons, and the cannons sound like nuclear explosions."

I'm watching 'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly'. The music score by Morricone is phenomenal, and yes the guns really do sound like cannons. Not a bad Sunday- reading a book (Unlikely Destinations) and watching a western, going to take a nap soon!

What's great about westerns?
You don't really have to pay much attention, there's minimal dialog, and they (almost) always have the same story.

Leone deservedly gets credit for one great breakthrough in the Western genre that is still followed today: in traditional Western films, heroes and villains alike looked like they had just stepped out of a fashion magazine and the moral opposites were clearly drawn, even down to the hero wearing a white hat and the villain wearing a black hat.

Leone's characters were, in contrast, more "realistic" and complex: usually "lone wolves" in their behaviour, they rarely shaved, looked dirty, and there was a strong suggestion of body odour and a history of criminal behaviour; they were morally ambiguous and often either generously compassionate or nakedly and brutally self-serving as the situation demanded. This sense of realism continues to affect Western movies today, and has also been influential outside this genre.

Many have called it ironic that an Italian director who could not speak English and had never even seen the American West could have almost single-handedly redefined the typical vision of the American cowboy.

Pix from Art Gallery + DJ

First Impressions: There was a LINE to get in. A line! What is this Studio fucking 54? We didn't have to wait that long, maybe 10 minutes. I hate waiting in lines (I never do), as far as I'm concerned no place is THAT cool to merit a line wait. Honestly if you're not on the guest list, and you have wait in line with the losers, why bother going out? I'd rather read a book and watch the Tour de France.

To be fair the location looked pretty cool, it was in a sketch alley, surrounded by industrial lofts. The music (albeit awful) could be heard a block away. Basically they get a solid 'B' for effort, but an 'F' for execution.

Music
: It was really god awful. In one room they had this odd hybrid that can only be described as Industrial Jungle. In the second room they had a mix of folk, hippy dancing music and electro. I'm serious. Now you wonder why I had a skull crushing migraine at 3 am.

Crowd: well I all I can say is that I was terribly overdressed. The 'look', by and large, can best be described as K-Fed + Homeless Chic. Over sized t-shirts, hats with stiff bills, large baggy jeans, sneakers, and rags etc. A portion of the clientèle were hippies. Some of the hippies smelt really bad, like awful b.o. style (I hate hippies, what they have against showering I'll never understand).

Eye Candy: like I said SF is not New York or Montreal. Girls who would measure a simple 6 on the hotness scale, look like 8's here. Seriously. Some of the girls were fat, hippy chicks. So not into fat hippy chicks, sorry!

Some pix, enjoy!

Art Gallery + DJ

I don't know how/when I end up apparently agreeing to go to these things. Tonight, I committed to attend an art gallery opening, with DJ playing and all. It sounds so incredibly pretentious. I'm sure I'm going to hate it. I'm not a cynic (ok I am) but I've seen enough of such gigs to know their inherent lameness. The other problem is that SF doesn't have superhot girls (except for the Persians), not like Montreal or New York, so I won't even have superior eye candy to keep me preoccupied.

You want to hear the worst?

I've started taking Advil before I go out. I know I'll end up with a headache, now THAT is cynical.

I'll Pass

Now I understand. When people reference their significant others, in conversation or otherwise, somehow I find myself feeling annoyed, irked, and even generally miffed. I'll admit it doesn't make much sense, however that doesn't take away from the fact that it happens, and on some level it has a negative impact on my mood, even if it's marginal. It's a purely selfish thought process.

Why?

Some people find completeness in their life sooner than others. Whoever said to have love and lost is better than not having loved at all was a damn fool. Sometimes I wish I had never experienced or seen what I have, that I had remained a blank, empty canvas, that I was somehow emotionally ignorant.

I realize there is a gap in my life, and I rue opportunities missed. Now, I may sound like I'm waiting for The One, but this isn't a movie where everything works out, a simple happy ending and all that. This is life, and it can be agonizingly imperfect. Reality bites, remember? I may more than just cynical, but I've resigned myself to a fate where my impatience may eventually trump my need for Chloe. A life with Mouse! How I wish it was otherwise, and that makes me somewhat bitter.

So you found completeness? That's great! I'm very happy for you, congratulations. I just rather not to hear about it.

Perfect

Fate

Anthony Hopkins once landed a leading role in a film based on the book The Girl from Petrovka by George Feifer. A few days after signing the contract, Hopkins travelled to London to buy a copy of the book. He tried several bookshops but was unsuccessful. Waiting at Leicester Square underground station for his train home, he noticed a book apparently discarded on a bench. Incredibly, it was The Girl from Petrovka, with notes scribbled in the margins.

Two years later, in the middle of filming in Vienna, Hopkins was visited by George Feifer, the author. Feifer mentioned that he did not have a copy of his own book. He had lent the last one — containing his own annotations — to a friend who had lost it somewhere in London. With mounting astonishment, Hopkins handed Feifer the book he had found. "Is this the one?" he asked, "with the notes scribbled in the margins?" It was the same book.

Gattaca

Gattaca is one of those movies I can watch again and again. The story is quite simple, a classic tale of man vs. himself and man vs. society. On some level, I admire the bleak yet sophisticated depiction of the future. Uma looks like the perfect muse, and I must admit this part may be her best one yet. All in all, it's a great flick, if you haven't seen it, check it out.

Bottled Water

For the last few years I've stuck to drinking bottled water. I find tap water disgusting. It tastes like metal. God knows how old those pipes are. Today's news is not a setback. As far as I'm concerned, it is STILL purified using a 7 step process, and yes, bottled water does taste better.

Princess of Persia II

Consolidated chat with Raya. Easier to tell the story- I had lunch with the Persians, it was quite interesting. Apparently I now have multiple Persian Aunty's looking to hook me up with their nieces. Ha!

KAL
you want to hear something funny?
i went for lunch with the persians
well with my sister to her friend's house
had lunch w the persian family
so we go over to see the persians
i took a half day from work, so
i went in my 'work' clothes:
- dark grey pants
- striped blue shirt
- silver knot cufflinks
- faux crocodile loafers
- navy blue v-neck

so we walked in
i was introduced
to various aunts
and uncles
we're sitting in the backyard patio
going to have lunch there
say ehlo to everyone
i sit down
and then...the aunts start chatting furiously
and i hear
blah blah blah KAL EL JANUM blah blah
KAL EL JAAN blah blah blah KAL EL JAAN
and i'm like WTF
(they say janum/jaan in terms of affection)
this was like 4 auntys
discussing amongst themselves
and then my sister's friend is like
KAL EL
MY AUNTS WANT TO SAY
THAT THEY THINK YOU
VERY HANDSOME
hehehehe
so i was like UH THANK YOU
(terribly handsome? haha)
then they're like blah blah blah KAL EL JANUM blah blah blah
then i hear, KAL EL MY AUNT WANTS TO FIND A PERSIAN GIRL FOR YOU
i reply, TELL YOUR AUNT, I WANT TO FIND A PERSIAN GIRL FOR ME TOO!!
anyways
then they're going on and on
this is all in the first 10 minutes of us showing up
so i decided to have some fun w the Auntys
I said LOOK
CHECK OUT THE CUFFLINKS
and they're all like
ooooooooo....
and then i was like
THE MERCEDES IS PARKED OUT FRONT
that remark with persians got big laughs,
they're like
ahhh.......
then they asked
OK KAL EL
we need to know...
DO YOU HAVE A PHD.
and i was like
......NO
and they're
awwwwwwwwwwww
yeah they were into it!

RAYA
thats pretty cool, so
ure in with the persian crowd
they love you
now they'll call u to lunches
to meet their beautiful nieces

KAL EL
hehehe
one can only hope!

RAYA
well u have to meet ppl
so this is how
and this is how u'll find
The One

KAL EL
please.
there is no THE ONE

RAYA
i dunno kal, but there are times
when i believe that, u feel like there is

KAL EL
no dude
there is no The One
remember,
reality bites!

RAYA
sure, mr. cynical

KAL EL
ha! look even if there was
it's too far-fetched
that's just my luck

RAYA
so there is?

KAL EL
hmm...how should i put this?
shut up dude :)

Surrealism

Q: How many surrealists does it take to change a light bulb?

A: BANANA!

So I've shared this joke with a few friends and I get two types of reactions:

#1: "hahahahahahaha!"

#2: "uh...I don't get it."

I think that's just the point. Either you get it or you don't. Don't ask me to explain it you! I, personally, thought it was hilarious. I genuinely laughed.

There are two types of people in this world, those who fundamentally understand such absurd humor and those who don't. If you understand the 'logic' behind this joke I bet you also enjoyed The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. If those things are true, then there's probably a good chance we'll get along. Yaay.

Princess of Persia

So I met up with my sis yesterday in the city. It was cool, we grabbed some dinner, and she told me about the Persian wedding she attended. After seeing the pix, all I can say is, PERSIAN GRRLS ARE THE HOTTEST EVER. (I realize that was immature, but their hotness deserves to be shouted from the mountaintops, and in lieu of that, at least in caps on my blog !)

I'm sure it would've been a lot of fun to attend the wedding, not the least bit motivated by the fact that I'd be surrounded by these seductive vixens. There was one girl that my sister thought would be perfect for me. Here's the hype: she's a lawyer, 27, and drop-dead gorgeous. I typically apply a discount factor of 90% to such hype, that keeps expectations well in check. Then I saw her picture. Well, I have to admit, she is super-hot.

Persian women though are notoriously high maintenance, and given my predilection for work, Smallville, reading, adventuring, and more importantly independence I'm not sure we'd be a good match. I've found many Persian women require a lot of attention, and frankly, I find needy personalities pitiful and annoying.

It's wrong of me to prejudge, but she does seem like a Lana, she had that mysterious sparkle in her eye. It's ironic, even after years of dating, meeting, and avoiding Lanas, I consistently come across them. Yet, I'm not quite immune to their inherent magnetic attraction. And therein lies the catch. You are tempted, but ultimately poisoned.

So what will I do? Well I'll probably give her a call. What else am I supposed to do, wait for The One? Please.

"However, the car is only a part of the overall program: people pay £1.3 million but are only allowed to drive the car on special track days approved by Ferrari and after they drive the car they have to brief Ferrari on the car's performance."
Ok I understand this is the new gilded age. I realize that lot of people have obscene amounts of money. However I did not expect some of the names on this list. I mean Roman Abramovich is your standard issue Russian Oligarch and Jean Todt was genius behind Ferrari's racing success. I can understand these luminaries owning an FXX. But Michael Fux?? Let me put this in perspective:

Michael Fux is the CEO of Sleep Innovations which makes foam pillows and mattress pads. How lame.

Free Movies!

I finally got cable today (that's how I was able to watch Smallville). Anyways my new 'digital' cable has on-demand movies- what's cool is that they have a free movies section. Yaay free! Free always tastes better. Anyways some of the movies are new, but most are old. I don't really mind. Right now I'm watching Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It's pretty good!

In case you're wondering what the different 'kinds' of encounters are:

- First: sight
- Second: evidence
- Third: contact

Mia Wallace

MIA
Now I'm gonna ask you a bunch of
quick questions I've come up with
that more of less tell me what kind
of person I'm having dinner with.
My theory is that when it comes to
important subjects, there's only
two ways a person can answer. For
instance, there's two kinds of
people in this world, Elvis people
and Beatles people. Now Beatles
people can like Elvis. And Elvis
people can like the Beatles. But
nobody likes them both equally.
Somewhere you have to make a
choice. And that choice tells me
who you are.

VINCENT
I can dig it.

Smallville!

I'm watching my first Smallville episode in a month! How did this happen? Well first I missed one episode. Then I got really busy at work, and wouldn't get home on time (Smallville starts every night, except Monday, at 7pm)...so I missed another one. Then I got busy with apartment hunting, moving, Hague visiting from London, and more work, so I missed a whole bunch and I was off the wagon. So now I have no clue where I last left the story, but I'm happy to be back*! Yaay Smallville!

*Watching Smallville non-linearly doesn't bother me as, being a lefty, I process information using synthesis (remember?)

Pulp Fiction

Watching Pulp Fiction, (I stopped watching the Oscars after Samuel Jackson didn't win for his performance). Here's a great scene-

Jules: What does Marcellus Wallace look like?

Brett: What?

Jules: What country you from?

Brett: What?

Jules: What ain't no country I ever heard of! They speak English in What?

Brett: What?

Jules: ENGLISH, MOTHERFUCKER! DO-YOU-SPEAK-IT?

Brett: Yes!

Jules: Then you know what I'm saying!

Brett: Yes!

Jules: Describe what Marcellus Wallace looks like!

Brett: What, I-?

Jules: Say what again. SAY WHAT AGAIN. I dare you, I double dare you, motherfucker. Say what one more goddamn time.

Brett: He's b-b-black...

Jules: Go on....

Brett: He's bald...

Jules: Does he look like a bitch?

Brett: What?

Jules: DOES HE LOOK LIKE A BITCH?

Brett: No!

Jules: Then why you try to fuck him like a bitch, Brett?

Brett: I didn't.

Jules: Yes you did. Yes you did, Brett. You tried to fuck him. And Marcellus Wallace don't like to be fucked by anybody, except Mrs. Wallace.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Another great line by Jules:

"Well I'm a mushroom-cloud-layin' motherfucker, motherfucker! Every time my fingers touch brain I'm SUPERFLY T.N.T, I'm the GUNS OF THE NAVARONE. In fact, what the fuck am I doin' in the back? You're the motherfucker should be on brain detail. We're fuckin' switchin' right now. I'm washin' the windows and you're pickin' up this nigger's skull."

The Guns of Navarone! hahahaha! Awesome!

Just Because

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

Multi-tasking

Here's what I did while talking on the phone with Gwen after work:

  • Drove home through traffic-hour traffic
  • Stopped at the grocery store (bought cheddar cheese, yummy)
  • Ordered and paid for dinner (steamed chicken and veggies)
  • Changed my clothes- that involved taking off my cufflinks
  • Cleaned the kitchen
  • Loaded the DVD player (it is seven years old but it's Pioneer multi-disc, it was cool in its day)
  • Warmed up dinner and opened a cold Diet Coke
This is while I told Gwen about my three-point plan for killer grad school essays, what's going on this weekend, a great conversation I had today with a partner, and my plans for next year. Oh she also read my post about the Pieta and was full of questions (after she was done making fun of me for being such a 'romantic').

I had this amazing week. Yet sitting here on Friday night, exhausted it seems terribly wrong that my family was the cause of unnecessary anxiety/angst. Doesn't anyone realize that I'm doing it all on my own? Do you know how difficult it is?

I had some big wins this week- really big wins- yet there is no one to share in my happiness, in my excitement and enthusiasm. There is so much I want to tell you. After years of hard work, I'm on the cusp of realizing great dreams, and there's no one to experience it with me, asides from this wretched blog. It makes me believe that Kal El has lost his greatest strength- the mythical human touch.

Toilet 2.0- update

Ah our foray into the exciting toilet-based device market continues! Okay perhaps there has been a tad too many poop-centric posts recently, but this is fascinating (seriously!)-

A toilet-paper dispenser that limits the issue of tissues.

"Most people will take the amount given," says Richard Thorne, director of the company's washroom business. Waxing philosophical, he adds, "People generally in life will take what you give them." (what a great title, Director, Washroom Business)

Kimberly-Clark turned to focus groups and years of internal research to determine just how much is right. (internal research, hehehee, no pun intended)

Americans typically use twice as much toilet paper as Europeans — as much as an arm's length each pull, Thorne says. The company decided the best length is about 20 inches — or precisely five standard toilet paper squares, though the $30-$55 machine can also be adjusted to churn out 16 inches or 24 inches, depending on the demand. (Americans are fatter, possibly resulting in great poop quantity, and have a greater, uh, surface area to wipe. Ok I think I just grossed myself out)

Sigh

After the conversation with my sister, I reached home and decided to talk to my Dad. My father sees the big picture and I figured he'd be a good source for advice. I told him what happened and he counseled that I should 'do the right thing' (to which I replied, bullshit) and that she was wrong to say what she did. Anyways the conversation I was dreading was with Ma, as she tends to me more emotional and, in my estimation, has a first born bias (you know of what I speak).

Anyways my Mom asked what transpired. Ma said that apparently I was very rude (yes) and angry (yes). I explained to Ma that I have tried my best since the age of fourteen to establish some sort of communication with my only sibling, and with this latest incident, I'm done. What did I mean by that? The fact is that I really don't care anymore and this was really the last straw, I'm through making any sort of effort. Obviously she felt I was over-reacting and yes, I am. I am also crazy, evil, and illogical. Mostly I'm just fed up and don't need additional bullshit in my life. So in sum I don't want to have anything to do with my sister, or have any sort of contact.

Ma said, "This is a very sad day in my life." And hung up the phone.

Aggravated

My sister is attending a friend's wedding in San Francisco, and has been the source major aggravation for the past two days. It started with a phone call yesterday from my parents, where they gave me her flight details the day before she is supposed to arrive. I was immensely pissed as I had asked for her travel dates previously and didn't receive any details. Two months ago she asked me if she could stay with me and I had explained that with the wedding in the city she would find it difficult to commute from my location (20 minutes outside of downtown) back and forth- I suggested that it would make more sense for her to attend the wedding by staying in the hotel with the remainder of the wedding guests. Anyways that got warped into, 'you said I can't stay at your place so I made my own arrangements.' Furthermore two months ago when asked about my plans in July I said I had to move, study for GMAT, and potentially travel for work, this was twisted into 'you said you were too busy to attend my friend's wedding.'

Anyways yesterday my parents called and I told them I haven't been informed of her plans at all, and I won't be able to now leave work in the middle of the day and pick her up from the airport. This in Eastern culture is a sign of disrespect and frowned upon. All I asked was for advance notice, so I could've taken the day off etc. Instead it was, Oh you're busy so she made her own plans. So I had an extremely contentious conversation with my parents yesterday. I felt like I was going to have an aneurysm. I honestly don't need this aggravation in my life, especially not now. Today my sister called and the conversation deteriorated within the first ninety seconds- I'll admit I was fuming mad. It ended with her hanging up on me. Not before she managed to snipe that, 'well you're only concerned about yourself, and not your family.'

I'm a generous person to a fault. However, like any true Scorpio, if you manage to cross me, then expect the worst. I'm so completely pissed at how I've been misconstrued that I have a good mind not to see her. It didn't have to be that way, but I'm genuinely upset and will not put on a false front. I realize this will cause my parents tremendous grief, and it leaves me in a bind. I don't appreciate selfishness and I will not tolerate being misrepresented. And if that means people get upset, well then, so be it. Think of it as the straw the broke the camel's back.

This can be added to a laundry list of items that are weighing heavily on my mind (and heart). Like what? Sigh. It doesn't matter, I don't expect you to understand.

As ever, K

Cafe Paragon

Ever visit the town of Providence in the wonderful state of Rhode Island?

You might have stumbled upon the Cafe Paragon in Providence?

In 1997 I found myself in a bizarre situation. I was having dinner with friends at the good cafe, afterwards was ready for a night on the town. Well I was told, 'we're staying here'. I was like, 'huh, this is a restaurant...'. I was told, well you'll see.

Cafe Paragon is a TRANSFORMER.

It was unreal. At the specified hour, the tables were moved to one side. The music was turned up. And let the games begin!

At least the night that I was there, I got the impression that it was the weekend home to Providence's international set, you know the mix: warm weather Euros, the rich Arabs, the token Swedes, and random South Americans.

At first I held back, not quite sure what to make of the 'transformation'. However when the Greek owner stepped on the bar with a high stack of plates and started smashing them on the floor, while the music thumped that 90's classic "p-p-p-paragon, pa-pa-paragon..", I thought to myself, 'Hmm, everything may just turn out alright after all!'.

You can't judge the good Cafe, you have to just go with it. It was a bizarre scene and in the end it made for a memorable night.

10 years on I'm talking to a co-worker today, who turns out attended Brown University in the aforementioned town of Providence, RI. The first thing I asked was whether she knew of Cafe Paragon? Her reply: "Of course, the transformer!"

Ha!

The Chloe Myth

Wow. So...I think my last post struck a nerve. I've been fielding a modest avalanche of questions about Chloe- who is she? what does she do? does she exist? where does she live? what does she look like? what did she think? what's her problem? what did I mean? what happens next?

Well.

I think Chloe exists in every girl; she is no one and everyone. And yes I do believe that a true Chloe exists, somewhere in the world. What did I mean? I describe a hope, a wish, a dream. Is it grounded in reality? Good question, that's not clear to me yet.

Whether Chloe and I end up in Roma is a question for the ages. My question to you though is- why do you care?

17.7.07

By My Side

Dear Chloe,

For nearly half my life, on my bedside table, I've had a miniature of La Pietà. It's the last thing I see at night, and the first thing I see in the morning. I remember the day, clearly, when I first saw a picture of the Pietà. I was transfixed. I realize this may sound like heresy, but I had never seen anything so remarkable yet ephemeral. Here was an object craved out of a block of marble by one man, and he had brought it to life. It was the most beautiful I had ever seen and, in a way, it was akin to falling in love.

In 1993 I had the opportunity to go to Roma with the AP Art History class, which would be the perfect opportunity to meet La Pieta. However, that year I was also planning on going to Thessaloniki with the Forensics team. I, of course, thought the most logical solution was to go Italy and Greece. Being an airline kid, and having the privilege of free travel, I thought that would be the best solution. Sadly, my parents didn't see it that way and I was forced to choose between two tantalizes choices.

Italy or Greece? Italy or Greece? Greece or Italy?

In the end I chose to go to Greece, and to be perfectly honest I don't regret it. The Forensics team that went to Thessaloniki was internationalism personified- a heady mixture of interesting personalities, beautiful girls, minimal (if any) supervision, and complete freedom in the perfect backdrop of Salonika. The trip was legendary. In terms of fun had, rules broken, and general mayhem it was perfect, I, for one, have not laughed so much in my life. In Retrospect, I made the right choice and had a wry smile seeing the triumphs youth fade into high school lore.

Nevertheless, I digress. Why didn't I go to Rome? I didn't believe I'd enjoy it as much. For me, la Pietà, deserved more time and far more respect than a 16 year old can even begin to imagine. So I wisely passed. I did however ask a friend to get me a miniature Pietà- the same one that sits by my bedside tonight. I guess all well that ends well? This same friend 'borrowed' my beloved copy of the Hitchhikers Guide and promptly neglected to return it. I guess, in a way, the Pietà was a fair trade.

What do I see in the Pietà?
The attention to detail. The love and effort in creating a timeless work of pure beauty. A gift to last the ages. Some might be moved by the religious imagery, however for me that is secondary. I'm inspired by its grace. And by the love that went into its creation.

Over the years my relationship with the Pietà has changed.

It used to be a symbol of everything that is wonderful in life, of love, of happiness, of all the elements of living that make us feel whole and feel connected to others, and that makes us realize we are not alone, a sort of love "shedding light on all that was irrational, all that was inevitable about the world."

Now it's my companion. The one constant that has been with me for half my time in this world. Every day that I've set out to face the world and challenges- days where I have faced my fears and triumphs. Every night I have returned to it, sometimes sad, sometimes hopeful, and sometimes lost. It has witnessed my greatest moments of joy and the depths of my despair. It symbolizes my triumphs, and is a little reminder of lessons learned from the dark night.

I hope to see la Pietà one day. On that beautiful day, I am with you when first set our eyes on her. Will you understand the magnitude of the moment? I'm not sure. But I will hold your hand, for that moment will symbolize a transition in my life. The Pietà of years past will make way for a new Pieta, you. You, I hope will be the constant in my life, one with whom I'll spend the remainder of my days, my companion through the rest of this journey.

Till that day,

Love, K

Today

I got home from work at 10 pm :(
Just put on season 1 of Mind Your Language (have you seen it?)
Going to start The Namesake tonight (review pending...)
My eyes hurt from staring at my laptop

Gnite, K

PS- Autobot Jazz was soooo annoying (puhleeeease). All hail Megatron!

Trashy Novel

These turn of events would be the perfect plot for a trashy novel:

People have secret lives such as “Carrie’s” for a number of reasons: fast money without the need for the usual job skills, escape from an otherwise boring life, the thrill of a secret identity, and/or the need to control and to feel powerful in a life that otherwise may have seemed out of control.

Her parents and her older brother, the latter a plastic surgeon, have now learned that their daughter/sister has literally worked night and day to keep up the almost $1 million home that she retained at the time of her divorce from her second husband, a man who allegedly went broke while trying to maintain his rich lifestyle for his wife and their children. It is her work at night, though, that has caused her family and friends to wonder how she was able to keep her two lives and her two identities separate, with her work as a female “escort” and masseuse who gave topless massages hidden from all who knew her from her “daytime” job and persona as a dance instructor.

Weekend Recap

Well it's more of a Sunday recap. I again only slept 5 hours, and woke up with the beginnings of a migraine. I honestly really really hate that. I don't know if you have suffered from migraines, but it is a terrible affliction. Anyways I woke up and I felt the beginnings of that familiar throbbing echo behind my left eye...took 2 Advil...ate an apple...checked facebook...gmail chat...blogged...went back to sleep and woke up at NOON.

Now I was like, damn it half the day is gone! I briefly considered being a jerk and not doing anything, basically hang out watching dvds, chatting on gmail, reading random entries on wikipedia, and planning Kal El's Excellent Adventure. Not a terrible way to spend Sunday. But I realized I'd just hate myself if I stayed in all day. It makes me feel useless. So I got up showered and headed to the bookstore.

I hadn't been to a bookstore in a while, and man Sunday is NOT the day to go. It was too crowded and noisy (I was a tad grouchy). See bookstores are the cousins of libraries, so people should learn to be quiet in them, its just proper bookstore etiquette. It's the whole adding the coffee shop to the bookstore idea, I was never a big fan of the 'merge'. The coffee shops have no atmosphere, and are too uncomfortable. Plus people feel compelled to talk hence ruining the bookstore vibe. As you can see I've thought about this. Oh what did I buy?

Well I told you that Tony Wheeler is my new hero so here's what I bought (asides from The Economist):

Bad Lands by Tony Wheeler and Once While Traveling: The Lonely Planet Story

and

I also picked up The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri- this is my first foray into so called 'immigrant fiction'. I'll approach it with an open mind and give it a fair shot. Jhumpa by the way has terribly beautiful eyes.

The rest of the day involved:

  • Moving in boxes, desk, weight bench
  • Organizing my apartment nominally (there are paths to walk!)
  • Spoke to Princess Fiona- her former boss didn't submit a recommendation, so I had to (as usual) play the role of counselor, I seem to do that quite often for my friends. Put things in perspective and made her laugh (see I can be nice)
  • Caught up with Hague- he just got back from Paris and wanted to talk about my recent Sales 2.0 post on Bubblegeneration that was quoted by Webex. I told him that I was pissed his girlfriend has stopped calling me, hehehe
  • Put on Ong Bak: Thai Warrior- I've started watching DVDs again, well I put them on and pay attention when merited
  • Worked for 2 hours-now I have a headstart on Monday, allows me to ease into the week, plus I told the boss I'd take care of it this weekend, so I did
  • Researched Kal El's Excellent Adventure- I think it might be too tiring to go all the way to England via train. I'm doing a drastic re-design of the trip. Right now I'm taking the train from Beijing to Shanghai to Hong Kong. But then I remembered next year are the Olympics so China is going to be insane...perhaps I should just train it from Turkey onwards? Decisions decisions...
  • Digital SLRs- I had settled on the Nikon D200. Then a friend told me he got the Canon EOS 400D and said it was just as good for half the price. I don't know. I've always had an issue about 'copying' people, its very important for me to be unique. I'm serious! At restaurants, I hate it when someone orders the same thing that I do, I will actually conspire to order at the end to avoid that. I know I probably didn't get enough hugs as a child
Pretty cool weekend as such- Oh I forgot to add- I went for a long walk around the neighborhood, it was fun but I still have to check out the beach trail. Book reports coming soon, stay tuned. If you have thoughts about the Excellent Adventure, or otherwise, share.

Good night and Good luck,

As ever,

Kal El

Everyday is like Sunday

No I'm not going to add the lyrics to what might be the most depressing song ever (albeit phenomenal still). Here's the plan for today:

  • Organize apartment- I worked on a bit yesterday, but still more to do. I've decided not to unpack all my belongings as...well I'll be packing them up again in another 6-8 months. So for now it's only clothes and essentials, the rest can stay in boxes :)
  • Visit bookstore- I haven't indulged in this, my favorite of activities, in forever. There are a couple of books I'm interested in checking out (Bad Lands by Tony Wheeler, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, and a travel guide on China!)
  • Go for a run- I wanted to go yesterday but I got tied up, there's a new trail I discovered in my neighborhood and I've been meaning to check it out, its along the water!
  • Movies- I'm tempted to see Harry Potter. Yesterday I really enjoyed watching Batman Begins on DVD- on the second go-around I was able to pick up on more subtleties- what a great flick! You know what was really cool about the movie? The sound. Seriously check it out, it's very well done
I feel ahead of the curve as I grabbed some groceries last night at 1 am :) You know what's really annoying? Waking up with a headache. I, for some reason, can't sleep in any more. I sleep for a maximum of 5, maybe 6, hours and I'm wide awake. But feeling tired. Today I woke up with a headache (that happens to us migraine sufferers at times). I hope it doesn't escalate and destroy my plans for today. So for now I'm going to take some Advil and see if I can sleep some more, otherwise I'll feel tired all day. Oh I'm going to have an apple for breakfast.

! Kal

I Love Anne

I admit, I love Anne Hathaway. She's dorky, but very pretty. She also seems like she can put together a coherent sentence. Perfect college girlfriend material.

The Boy With the Thorn In His Side

I think I'm going to start communicating exclusively through lyrics, this will be part of my (increasing) eccentricity:

The boy with the thorn in his side
Behind the hatred there lies
A murderous desire for love
How can they look into my eyes
And still they don't believe me ?
How can they hear me say those words
Still they don't believe me ?
And if they don't believe me now
Will they ever believe me ?
And if they don't believe me now
Will they ever, they ever, believe me ?

The boy with the thorn in his side
Behind the hatred there lies
A plundering desire for love
How can they see the love in our eyes
And still they don't believe us ?
And after all this time,
They don't want to believe us
And if they don't believe us now
Will they ever believe us ?
And when you want to live
How do you start ?
Where do you go ?
Who do you need to know ?

Tony Wheeler

Tony Wheeler is the founder of Lonely Planet. And he is cool. Which other modern-CEO has a blog with a post on toilets from around the world?

Being the romantic that I am, I felt this was a great honeymoon and the beginning of a beautiful friendship; their marriage is basically a fascinating adventure:

Where it all began…

A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket, and a sense of adventure.

That's all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime. They met on a park bench in Regent's Park and married a year later. For their honeymoon, they decided to attempt what few people thought possible – crossing Europe and Asia overland, all the way to Australia. It took them several months and all the money they could earn, beg or borrow, but they made it. And at the end of it all, they were flat broke… and couldn't have been happier.

Tony & MaureenIt was too amazing an experience to keep to themselves. Urged on by their friends, they stayed up nights at their kitchen table writing, typing and stapling together their very first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap.

Within a week they'd sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. Two years later, their second journey led to South-East Asia on a shoestring, which led to books on Nepal, Australia, Africa, and India, which led to… you get the picture.

How Soon Is Now?

I was listening to this great song by The Smiths today:

I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

There's a club if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home and you cry
And you want to die

When you say it's gonna happen "now"
Well when exactly do you mean?
See I've already waited too long
And all my hope is gone

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

Siege Mentality

Many years ago at a dinner party a wise old uncle* said 'you'll figure things out when you turn 30'. At the time, being the punk that I was (am), I thought he had enjoyed one scotch too many, and I casually dismissed his comments as dinner chit-chat aided by the magic of good ol' Johnny Walker.

Well I was wrong. I admit it, the man knew of what he spoke.

This year has been a real eye-opener for me. I (finally) have managed to shed the constructs, baggage, and expectations, that I carried around since I graduated from college. I had a such a chip on my shoulder, to prove people wrong, to prove myself, to show what I could do etc. It was a siege mentality and it wore on me over the years. The strong, largely negative, emotions that I used to motivate myself were akin to poison that was slowly liquefying my inner strength. I always felt such tremendous pressure to be successful that I suffered constant anxiety/stress over 'my future'. That would mean constantly self-chastisement for not achieving more in a shorter period of time. I was impatient with myself and with my life. I should there, but instead I'm here. Constantly comparing oneself and berating oneself is a terrible waste of a day. I spent 7 years doing that.

So what's different now? Well for one, all that I aim for in life is for my own satisfaction. I'm no longer compelled to justify my 'success' (or lack thereof) in comparison to others. Secondly, I realize it's in my power to merge the life I want with the life that I have. It's well within my power to achieve the outcomes I desire- it's amazing how our self-limiting beliefs can be our be your largest obstacle. And finally, I realize that I want to leave my imprint on life, I don't want to stumble to obscurity and inevitability- that all the hardship, solitude, and effort is worth something beyond my years on this planet.

*I met the same uncle on a recent visit to SF and he said he was impressed with my clarity regarding life/outcomes. He also said that I was too serious and grumpy, and I should learn to enjoy the journey to my goals. I, of course, thought he had enjoyed one scotch too many, and I casually dismissed his comments...

Can I Get a Hug?

This is scary but hilarious!

Then he tucked the gun into the pocket of his nylon sweatpants.

"I think I may have come to the wrong house," he said, looking around the patio of the home in the 1300 block of Constitution Avenue NE.

"I'm sorry," he told the group. "Can I get a hug?"

Rowan, who lives in Falls Church and works part time at her children's school, stood up and wrapped her arms around him. Then it was Rabdau's turn. Then his wife's. The other two guests complied.

"That's really good wine," the man said, taking another sip. He had a final request: "Can we have a group hug?"

The five adults surrounded him, arms out.

With that, the man walked out with a crystal wine glass in hand, filled with Chateau Malescot. No one was hurt, and nothing was stolen.

Wesley Crusher

A friend recently mentioned how she 'loves' Wesley Crusher. As a Star Trek TNG fan, I believe that Wesley Crusher was an evil scourge akin to the Bubonic Plague and deserved to be permanently eradicated from the databanks of all references to TNG. I hope that conveys how much I hated him :) Anyways, check out Wesley's expression in this clip, he's such an idiot.

Confucius Say...

I realize these are lame, but I've always found them funny/amusing:

1. Confucius say, panties not best thing on earth, but next to it
5. Confucius say, war not determine who right. War determine who left
13. Confucius say, man with hand in pocket feel cocky all day long
18. Confucius say, man who run behind bus get exhausted
24. Confucius say, man who eat crackers in bed wake up feeling crummy
26. Confucius say, man who sleep in bed of nails is holy
32. Confucius say, to meet girl in park is good, but to park 'meet' in girl is better
35. Confucius say, man who live in glass house, should change in basement
40. Confucius say, man who leap off cliff jump to conclusion
60. Confucius say, two wrongs not make right, but two rights make U-turn
70. Confucius say, man who put cream in tart, not always baker
75. Confucius say, support bacteria - is only culture some people have
81. Confucius say, man piss in wind, wind piss back
98. Confucius say, man who eat too many prunes, get good run for money
100. Confucius say, itchy butt at night, smelly finger in morning

Ms. New Jersey

I have mentioned previously that I find pop culture fascinating. It's such a train wreck that one can't help but look. It also makes for great cocktail party conversation i.e. small talk. It really is the minutiae of life. Anyways, I digress.

America is obsessed with beauty pageants and it was 'news' that Ms. New Jersey has was being blackmailed with 'pictures' ! *GASP!* Anyways her handlers did a preemptive strike and released the 'pictures' to the media and she diligently went on GMA to talk about it with Matt Lauer. The pictures are so LAME. I mean come on! This reeks of self-promotion.

What happened to aspiring to the lofty standards set by Katie Rees* i.e. Miss Nevada?!

Gridskipper

I'm a big fan of travel guides, travel shows, and Lonely Planet. Recently I found that gridskipper just tries way too hard. I mean come on- a map of New York on where to score cocaine? You would have to be monumentally stupid believe something so mainstream, and fundamentally devoid of any intelligence if you can't score yo crack in New Jack City.

However it does go to show that coke is back in a big way. It's amazing at how much coke is being snorted, sniffed, and consumed again on the party circuit (albeit not by me, remember 'good face'). Good luck to these modern day Stu Ungars- have fun with the septum replacement surgery :)

I think I'll stick to Lonely Planet and Global Voices to get my TCK kicks, thank you very much!

Downtown Excursions

I have a couple of friends in town for a week, so for the last 3 days I've been heading into the city. Given that yesterday was the All-Star Game and the day before Home Run Derby you would not believe the extent of the traffic retardation. I, wisely, took the train. Anyways here are various pix taken with my cell phone over the last few days :)

I love taking pictures (and yes I was always the 'guy with the camera). I'm seriously debating getting a digital SLR (my digital camera died recently), but then again I'm also seriously considering an Omega. I feel torn between the two. I love taking pictures, but I also love Omega watches. I thought about getting the Omega and a 'regular' digital camera, but it seems like such a cop-out. Somehow, I get the feeling I'll end up getting both. Adios bonus!

Look! It's R2D2 hanging out near Union Square. I have to admit that is quite ingenious, especially for the US Postal Service?!

This is on the train heading into the city. Look at the 'Warning' sign, you can't quite read it but it's very 1984. Essentially says you're being recorded, taped, photographed. I assume this is to deter violence and crimes but in today's political atmosphere its reminiscent of dystopia:

I love this picture. It (oddly) reminds me of the East Coast, actually of Philly. Not that I should have many memories from Philly, but this stop is called Balboa Park. Get it? Balboa? Philly? Ok I admit I do have lapses in dorkitude :)

This is in front of the snazzy Westin Hotel on Monday night. There were about 30 California Highway Patrol (CHiPs!) motorcycles parked in front as the baseball All-Stars were staying at the Westin. I like this pic because not only did I take it as I was crossing the street but I managed to capture the limo which adds an element of ubercool:

I like this picture as well, taken from the 10th floor of the Orchard Hotel in Nob Hill. The Orchard is a little boutique hotel, SF is great in that sense- you can get away from the mega chains and find these neat boutique hotels that are awesome. From this picture you get a sense of the hills! :

First they are recording us on the train AND you can't eat or drink?? What the fuck is that! I agree with the no smoking, but no eating or drinking? Police state:

Every time I drive out of the city, I try take a picture of the Lamborghini show room on Van Ness. On the left you can vaguely make out the Lambo with it's open scissor doors. Yes all the pictures are blurry, and I'm not sure why I persist on taking them while driving a vehicle late at night. I love Lambos, that's the only reason I can think of...well not everything in life has to be absolutely logical, does it?

Well I hope you enjoyed my pix, since I woke up late, spent 45 minutes blogging, I am now really late for work.

Adios, Elmo

New Order Said So

Every time I think of you
I feel shot right through with a bolt of blue
It's no problem of mine but it's a problem I find
Living a life that I can't leave behind
There's no sense in telling me
The wisdom of a fool won't set you free
But that's the way that it goes
And it's what nobody knows
While every day my confusion grows
Every time I see you falling
I get down on my knees and pray
I'm waiting for that final moment
You'll say the words that I can't say

I feel fine and I feel good
I'm feeling like I never should
Whenever I get this way, I just don't know what to say
Why can't we be ourselves like we were yesterday
I'm not sure what this could mean
I don't think you're what you seem
I do admit to myself
That if I hurt someone else
Then I'll never see just what we're meant to be

Getting back to my emerging rant about lyrics. I'm sure you've heard of New Order? If you haven't then you are a soul-less freak that needs to be institutionalized for crimes of audio indiscretion [jest]. Seriously, pick up (how I date myself) a CD, or download this song, it is pure genius. It's amazing how much great music emerged from 1985-1992 (dating myself again).

One thing I've been getting into in a big is listening to remixes of such tracks, some of them aren't bad! This New Order song though really sums up how I've felt today- happy and a bit reflective- (more on that later)

Chloe vs. Lana II

I would wait for this day however (sadly) I don't see it on the immediate horizon. Lana may win in the end because she is sly and cunning. Chloe! Somebody saaaaaaaave me!

More Great Lyrics

I know I've been Morrissey/Smiths heavy but this is such a great song! Gives voice to the generic misery we all feel once in a while. Meh [shrug shoulders] yes?

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now

I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now

In my life
Why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die ?

Two lovers entwined pass me by
And heaven knows I'm miserable now

Humanism

On my facebook profile, my religion is listed as 'humanity'. I've always had a contentious relationship with organized religion, as I feel it creates more barriers and problems, than it solves. I believe in the power of God, prayer, and love. However I have not suspended my capacity for logic in embracing faith 'blindly'. I will continue to be a Muslim, however feel that my definition of being a one is radically different from conventional wisdom. I believe humanity is the foundation for all religions. I also believe you should learn about humanism.

  • Knowledge of the world is derived by observation, experimentation, and rational analysis
  • Humans are an integral part of nature, the result of unguided evolutionary change
  • Ethical values are derived from human need and interest as tested by experience
  • Life’s fulfillment emerges from individual participation in the service of humane ideals
  • Humans are social by nature and find meaning in relationships
  • Working to benefit society maximizes individual happiness

Irresistible Force vs. Immovable Object

Continuing with my emerging interest in philosophy, this will make you think!

The classic Irresistible Force Paradox is formulated as follows:

What happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object?

Common responses to this paradox resort to logic and semantics-

  • Logic: if such a thing as an irresistible force exists, then no object is immovable, and vice versa. It is logically impossible to have these two entities (a force that cannot be resisted and an object that cannot be moved by any force) in the same universe.
  • Semantics: if there is such a thing as an irresistible force, then the phrase immovable object is meaningless in that context, and vice versa, and the issue amounts to the same thing as asking, e.g., for a triangle that has four sides.

This paradox is a form of the omnipotence paradox, but that paradox is most often discussed in the context of God's omnipotence i.e. can God create a stone so heavy that He cannot lift it?

The only immovable object I've come across is a woman scorned. I've always seen myself as the irresistible force, so who wins? In the short term, I do, but in the long term, she does (always!).

787- Aviation @ the Edge

I've been a long time admirer of the jet industry. Today, Boeing unveils the 787, the fastest selling aircraft in aviation history, and the single most important factor in Boeing's miraculous comeback.

The reason Boeing has been able to compete spectacularly is very simple: they gave the customer what they needed. After 9/11 the aviation industry essentially imploded with a toxic mix of, higher fuel costs, lower passenger volume, and antiquated cost structures. The ripple effect was felt from airline doing the flying, to all the suppliers, Boeing included. Boeing was able to respond to the calamity by offering an overpowering value proposition: fly further for less. And voila the market responds with 677 orders! Amazing how that works.

So how did Boeing deliver tremendous the 'fly further for less' value? Boeing has (finally) now developed a plane that takes advantage of composite materials, resulting in a lighter plane. Lighter planes are more fuel efficient. Thank you very much, please sign on the dotted line.

Composites, such as carbon fiber, have long been used in the production of supercars and in Formula 1 racing, primarily for their strength and lack of weight. Perhaps composites weren't used in earlier models due to the higher stresses/g-forces that a fuselage encounters- maybe the technology needed to evolve, however I suspect it's more likely that the aircraft industry in general, and Boeing in particular, just needed a wake-up call.

A final piece of the Boeing turn-around has been their willingness to actually participate in this little phenomenon called globalization and farm-out production, even the secretly-guarded, mission critical, aircraft wing:

"For its entire history, Boeing has guarded its techniques for designing and mass producing commercial jetliner wings. For economic and political reasons, the wings will be manufactured by Japanese companies in Nagoya, e.g. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries; the horizontal stabilizers will be manufactured by Alenia Aeronautica in Italy; and the fuselage sections by Vought in South Carolina (USA), Alenia in Italy, Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Japan and Spirit AeroSystems, in Wichita, Kansas (USA).[35] The passenger doors will be made by Latecoere (France) and the cargo doors, access doors and crew escape door will be made by Saab (Sweden)."
This is a prime example, of a core competency moving to the edge. The aviation industry is notorious for jealously guarding it's secrets, especially wing technology. The fact that Boeing has agreed for some many critical parts, the wing included, to be manufactured by supplier is a validation of leveraging edge competencies. Note there is a fundamental difference in globalization and leveraging the edge: globalization is an overall economic/political construct regarding the free flow of goods, business, capital etc. Edge competencies require fundamentally understanding your value chain and leveraging it for greater benefit to the entire eco-system (i.e. yourself, customers, suppliers etc.). In this case, by outsourcing critical manufacturing components, Boeing was able to take advantage of it's network intelligence, and empower it's partners with the ensuing success. Not only is this an economically sound decision, but politically sensible as well. (Japanese industrial participation is very important to the project, with 35% work share, with many of the subcontractors supported and funded by the Japanese government- All Nippon Airways is the launch customer, and they received a 40-50% discount- amazing how that works). Nevertheless, well done Boeing, it's amazing what happens when you look past yourself and mobilize your edge networks (and listen to the market!).

It'll be interesting how Boeing will continue to differentiate its offerings due to the high degree of commodization within the industry i.e. Airbus should be able to deliver their own composite-based offering soon. I believe the key in differentiation will be service and peripherals, e.g. the 787 can be retrofitted with Rolls Royce and GE engines interchangeably.
By continuing to eliminate nuisance costs, and by staying focused on its fundamental value (fly further for less), Boeing should have this market locked up for the next twenty years.

On the whole, kudos to Boeing for an end to end masterful job, even marketing videos look exciting- check out the cool window tinting technology in 'Welcome Aboard'.

Great Lyrics

When your gift unfurls
When your talent becomes apparent
I will roar from the stalls
I will gurgle from the circle
The Saints smile shyly
Down on you
They couldn't get over
Your nine-leaf clover

What has happened to music? Where are the great lyrics of today? I'm not sure what 'I will roar from the stalls' and 'I will gurgle from the circle' even means, but it sounds great. I'm not a fan of the chorus, but as far as intros go, this is top-notch. Did you figure out what song it is?*

Toilet Culture!

This is hilarious:

"We are spreading toilet culture. People can listen to gentle music and watch TV," said Lu Xiaoqing, an official with the Yangrenjie, or "Foreigners Street," tourist area where the bathroom is. "After they use the bathroom they will be very, very happy."
I wonder if they have a Washlet?

Note to Self

Make sure your alarm is turned off when the weekend hits.

On most mornings, thanks to my body bioclock, I tend to wake up at the same time (and normally before my alarm). I set the alarm on my cell phone purely as a backup, just in case I've an unusually difficult case of insomnia* and got marginal sleep at best. Anyways like most people, who function in sleep debt, I catch up on my sleep on the weekends. If that doesn't happen for whatever reason, Kal El gets very cranky. Very very cranky.

Luckily my cellphone has an option where the alarm is activated for the weekdays, exclusively. Well today, Sunday, I woke up because...the alarm** went off. My response:

*&^%$##*&%$##@!~&^$# !!!

I felt like taking my cell phone and throwing it out the window. Aaaaaaaaaah, why why why? Now I'll never be able to go back to sleep! Well that's not entirely true, one trick that does work: when I was a kid, I'd wake up early on the weekends (because I was hungry) and make myself this giant breakfast: omelet, cheddar cheese, wheat toast, orange juice, the works. I'd gorge myself and then promptly fall asleep.

Hmmm, I might have to try the food-as-narcotic trick today.

*Insomnia is weird- for the first few hours after I 'wake' up I'm strangely more aware/focused. I'm not really thinking about anything except what's in front of me- I can bring forth my full computing, processing power in those few hours. However that altered state doesn't last and typically by the afternoon I hit a wall- for as aware as I was in the morning, I'm proportionally scrambled in the afternoon i.e. the brain has run of reserve fuel and needs to recharge!

**I bought an alarm clock my first year of college and put a trippy Sailor Moon sticker on it- I had bought these stickers on my birthday (Halloween) and was handing them out to those I chose (see I can be friendly- it was also a great ice-breaker with absolutely random girls, hot random girls I might add- their unanimous reaction was always some variation of 'I love Sailor Moon!' Muhahaha). Anyways, being a notorious packrat, I've had the alarm clock for 12 years and I can't seem to get myself to throw it out. It still works! The alarm is this really loud, annoying, blaring TAAA TAAA TAAA which has conditioned me over the years to wake up before it sounds and turn it off- that way I can sleep 'uninterrupted'. Good logic, yes? My fellow insomniacs will understand.
