Pretty good interview with Cisco's next CEO [in my opinion] Michelangelo Volpi. Its a bit dates [from Oc 2002] however its interesting to see how Cisco has managed to keep adapting to changing market conditions and how they are positioning themselves for future success. During the Bubble Days their M & A engine was the 'star', in fact Mike was even named Cheif Strategy Officer. Times change, they reorganized, and are focusing more product development to veteren management. Simply brilliant. The interest thing is that they may not have the best technology, but they definitely have the best marketing.

I spent "some" time on msn messenger, keeping "in touch" with friends through out the work day. However, I've noticed that some of my friends have started using a new type of language....a strange mix between traditional English and a new form of English where words and phrases are modified for ease of typing. For example: you is replaced by u, the need to show humour is signaled by LOL, adverbs or adjectives are left out, and thoughts come in a sporadic, non-sequitur sort of way. Is there a name for this new language? Webglish, possibly.

The new generation of search engines are coming...well, not truley new search algorithms, but visualization and characterization tools designed to help you sort out the mess that is the world wide web.

Will they make things easier? Probably not.

The internet is an open source, for anybody to put anything on. With the introduction of blogging, it's easier than ever to put what ever junk you have floating in your head onto the internet. On top of this, it's one big jumbled-linked-mess of a spider web type thing. The mess is an intrinsic feature...the only things I can think that could solve this problem are:

One, a registration and naming system that is organized (like the dewey decimal system); where the name of your site and the information it contains has to have some sort of relevance to each other. Ofcourse this isn't really feasible.

Second, a webcrawler application (those programs that essentially do the dirty work for sites like google, scouring the internet looking for words, keeping track of sites, jumping through links) with some sort of machine intelligence, so that it can "webcrawl" intelligently, cutting off the fat, analysing the results, making me a cup of coffee while it's at it. This, too, is about as feasible as a T101 breaking into my office and playing an old dixieland tune for my enjoyment.

Third... an act of God. The feasibility of this option is up for debate.

Who needs hardware anymore? Just as the vacuum tube was replaced by the solid state transistor, the role of hardware in many applications is beginning to be replaced by software. Take for example software defined radio, developed by the US government for military use, this system replaced all the transistors and capacitors in typical radios with software algorithms, allowing for the modulation and demodulation of all signal types (eg AM, FM, CB, WB, HDTV) with the simple switch of a software element.

GPS systems have been all the rage for the past few years. GPS receivers communicate with a satellite array to give accurate 3d positional information. However, as soon as you walk into a building, everything stops working. As good as they are, satellites can't communicate within buildings. So what if I'm lost in a mall and want exact directions to the local Sony store, or what if I want to precisely track the exact location of my parts in a manufacturing process?
